System owner

The person authorised to approve an outage of a system and accountable for the consequences. No window without them, and no evidence without a record.

Also calledapplication owner · business owner · service owner

The person the organisation recognises as able to decide that a given system may go down at a given time. Not necessarily whoever runs it technically, and not necessarily whoever requested it originally.

The quiet problem

"Who owns this host?" looks trivial until you try to answer it across several hundred of them. The name in the inventory belongs to whoever ordered the machine seven years ago; they have changed role; two other people believe they are responsible.

Until one source ties host to system and system to a person, every window starts with three emails and one reply that never arrives.

And the approval itself has to be written. A verbal approval evaporates at precisely the moment it is needed.
