Sidebar and page descriptions

Two screens decide how the product reads without changing what it does: the sidebar editor sets the menu's order and its names, and page descriptions set the sentence each screen says about itself.

Sidebar

The sidebar editor works in two scopes, chosen at the top of the screen:

A personal scope does not cut you off from the default forever — "Reset to default" deletes the personal customization and puts you back on whatever the organization defines.

What you can do

• Order — drag. A blue line marks where the item will land, including above the first row and below the last. The left and right arrow keys do the same from the keyboard, and every drag has a full keyboard equivalent.
• Groups — dragging onto the middle of a group row puts the item inside it; dragging onto that row's top or bottom edge places it beside the group. Administrators can also create their own groups, with a name and an icon; deleting a group returns its items to the top level.
• Names — click the name to edit it.
• Hiding — the eye icon. In the personal scope the item disappears for you alone; in the default-for-everyone scope it disappears for everyone, administrators included.

The menu is two levels deep, so a group cannot go inside a group. The attempt is refused with an explanation rather than silently.

What happens on upgrade

• An item that no longer exists in the product but appears in the saved order is simply skipped. Deleting a page cannot empty a sidebar.
• A new page missing from the saved order is appended in its natural place. A page shipped in a new version does not stay invisible until someone opens this screen and saves.
• The permission travels with the row. An item that requires a permission stays hidden from anyone without it, even after it has been dragged into another group. Hiding is a convenience in any case — the real control is on the server.

Page descriptions

Every page in the product carries one sentence saying what it is. It sits behind a hint bulb next to the title, and the Page descriptions screen is where it is reworded.

Each page has three states:

The third state exists because the original ask was "less text on the screen", and "clear the box" is already taken for "give me the original back".

Each page's box shows its shipped wording as the placeholder. A page you have not yet visited in this browser says so explicitly, rather than showing an empty box that could be mistaken for "this page has no sentence".

Descriptions are written by holders of the system-settings permission, and read by everyone.
